The right piece count is the difference between a puzzle that gets finished and one that goes back in the box. Too few pieces and it is over in ten minutes. Too many and it stops being fun.
Use this chart as a starting point. Every puzzler is different, and a child who does puzzles every week will be well ahead of it.
Piece count by age
What size puzzle for an 8 year old?
Between 100 and 300 pieces. Start at the lower end if puzzles are new to them and move up as they finish faster. Pick a picture they care about. A child who loves horses will stick with a hard horse puzzle longer than an easy puzzle of something they do not care about.
Our Kids plan is built around this range: one 100 to 300 piece puzzle a month for ages 8 and up.
What size puzzle for adults?
1,000 pieces is the standard adult puzzle. It usually takes several sittings, fits on a normal dining table, and offers the widest choice of images.
For an adult beginner, start with 500. It builds the habits (sort the edges, group by color, work in sections) without the long middle stretch that makes people give up on their first 1,000.
Our Classic plan covers 500 to 1,000 pieces, and you can tell us in your order notes which end of the range you prefer.
What makes a puzzle harder, apart from piece count
Piece count is only part of difficulty. Two 1,000 piece puzzles can feel completely different.
- The image. Big areas of one color (sky, water, snow) are slow. Busy images with lots of distinct objects, text, or color changes are faster.
- The cut. A standard grid cut, where pieces line up in rows, is easier than a random cut where every piece is a different shape.
- Piece size. Larger pieces are easier to handle and see.
- Finish. A matte finish is easier on the eyes under a lamp than a glossy one.
So a 500 piece puzzle of a plain night sky can be harder than a 1,000 piece collage.
When to move up
Move up a size when they finish a puzzle in one sitting and do not seem challenged, or when they start asking for something harder. Move down, without any fuss, if puzzles are being left unfinished.
For adults ready to go beyond 1,000, our Pro+ plan sends 1,500 to 2,000 piece puzzles. Make sure you have the table for it: a 2,000 piece puzzle is typically around 38 by 27 inches.
