Most people need somewhere between 5 and 12 hours to finish a 1,000 piece puzzle, usually spread over several days. A fast, experienced puzzler can do it in 3 or 4 hours. A relaxed beginner with a difficult image might take 15 or more. All of those are normal.
Typical times by piece count
These are rough ranges for one adult puzzling at a casual pace.
Notice that doubling the pieces more than doubles the time. With more pieces on the table, each one takes longer to find.
How long with two people?
Two people are faster, but not twice as fast. A 1,000 piece puzzle that takes one person 8 hours might take two people 5 or 6. You get in each other's way a little, and you talk. Most people would say that is the point.
It works best when each person takes a section: one does the sky, the other does the buildings.
What makes a puzzle faster or slower
The image. This is the biggest factor. A puzzle full of distinct objects, colors, and text comes together quickly. Large areas of sky, sea, grass, or snow slow everyone down.
The cut. Grid-cut pieces in neat rows are quicker than random-cut pieces in unusual shapes.
Sorting. Ten minutes spent sorting saves an hour of hunting. Turn every piece face up, pull out the edges, and group the rest by color or pattern.
Space and light. A table big enough to spread every piece out, and a good lamp, make more difference than most people expect.
Experience. Regular puzzlers learn to read piece shapes as well as colors, and they get noticeably faster.
Five ways to finish sooner
- Flip and sort everything before placing a single piece.
- Build the border first.
- Work on the most distinctive areas next: faces, lettering, bright colors.
- Sort the leftover plain pieces by shape, then try them one at a time.
- Take breaks. Fresh eyes spot pieces that tired eyes miss.
Or do not rush at all
There is no prize for speed. A 1,000 piece puzzle at half an hour an evening is two or three weeks of something to come back to, which is about the right pace if a new one arrives every month.
That is how our plans are designed. Classic sends one 500 to 1,000 piece puzzle a month. If you finish those in a weekend and want something that lasts, Pro+ sends 1,500 to 2,000 pieces.
