How to Choose a Puzzle Subscription

Oct 11, 2026

A puzzle subscription sends a new jigsaw puzzle to your door on a schedule, usually once a month. They are sometimes called puzzle of the month clubs. The idea is simple, but the services differ more than you might expect. Here is how to tell them apart and pick the right one.

The four types of puzzle subscription

1

Curated, multi-brand. A team picks a puzzle for you each month from several manufacturers. You get variety in artists, cut styles, and themes, and you do not have to choose. This is how Puzzle Monthly works. Best for: people who like a surprise and want to try brands they would not have found.

2

Choose your own. You pick each puzzle from a catalog, and the subscription gives you a discount or free shipping. Best for: puzzlers with strong preferences who want control over every box.

3

Single brand. A manufacturer sends you puzzles from its own range. Quality is consistent, and so is the style. Best for: fans of one particular brand.

4

Rental. You receive a puzzle, finish it, and mail it back for the next one. It costs less per puzzle and nothing piles up in the closet. You do not keep anything, and you rely on the previous person having returned every piece. Best for: fast puzzlers who do not want to own them.

What to check before you subscribe

Piece count. This matters more than anything else. A puzzle that is too easy is boring, and one that is too hard sits in the box. Most adults are happy between 500 and 1,000 pieces. Look for a service that lets you choose a range and, ideally, tell them your preference within it. Our piece count guide covers this in detail.

Whether you keep the puzzles. With everything except rental, they are yours.

Shipping. Check whether it is included in the price. A lower monthly price with shipping added at checkout often costs more.

Commitment. Some services bill month to month. Some require 6 or 12 months up front. Prepaying usually lowers the price per puzzle. Read how renewal works before you buy, especially for a gift.

Pausing. Puzzlers have busy months. Check that you can pause without cancelling.

Preferences. Can you tell the service what you like and dislike? If you never want to see another lighthouse, this matters.

Duplicates. Ask what happens if you are sent a puzzle you already own, or one you have already received from them.

What does a puzzle subscription cost?

Prices depend on piece count, brand quality, and whether shipping is included. As a reference point, Puzzle Monthly plans run from $27.99 to $36.99 per box with shipping included in the contiguous US. The lowest price is a Kids plan prepaid for 12 months. The highest is Pro+ paid month to month.

When you compare services, compare the total per puzzle delivered, not the headline price.

Are puzzle subscriptions worth it?

They are worth it if you would buy about a puzzle a month anyway, if you enjoy not knowing what is coming, or if choosing is the part you like least. A good curated subscription also gets you puzzles you would not have picked and end up loving.

They are not worth it if you puzzle a few times a year, or if you only enjoy one very specific style. In that case, buy individual puzzles when the mood strikes.

A subscription is at its best as a gift. It is one decision that produces a present every month, and the recipient does not have to do anything.

A quick way to decide

  • You like surprises and variety: curated, multi-brand
  • You know exactly what you want: choose your own
  • You love one brand: single brand
  • You finish puzzles fast and do not keep them: rental
  • You are buying a gift: curated, with a prepaid term and a personal note

If curated sounds right, compare our three plans, or see how gifting works.
